Securitize Solana tokenisation drives 38% share fall as market structure shifts
Securitize Solana tokenisation of Apple and Nvidia shares has triggered a 38% slide in the company’s stock, raising questions about revenue.
Securitize Solana tokenisation of Apple and Nvidia shares has driven a 38% slide in the company’s own stock, reshaping its market structure and raising doubts about revenue and liquidity.
Launch Day Surge, Follow-On Decline
On 8 October, Securitize announced its Securitize Stocks product, offering 12 US equities on Solana. The stock opened at $12.66, rose 11% that day, and gained another 9% the next session. By 1:13 pm ET the following Thursday, the share price had fallen to $7.81, a 15% drop from the day’s close and 38% below the launch-day level. The decline outpaced the broader market and coincided with the absence of disclosed trading volumes or holder counts for the new tokens.
Securitize Solana tokenisation: Who Holds Leverage?
Securitize positions itself as the primary lever. It supplies the tokens, operates the broker-dealer platform, and appoints Jump Trading as market maker. In return, it seeks revenue from token issuance and trading fees. The firm also bears the cost of potential dilution, as the SEC’s Innovation Exemption requires tokenised shares to carry the same rights as the underlying equities, limiting the creation of synthetic products that could attract higher volumes.
Market Structure Shifts
The tokens trade on Securitize’s own platform, with settlement in USDC. Trading currently runs in extended hours, with a plan to move to 24/7. The firm also expects the tokens to appear on OKXICE, a venue jointly owned by NYSE parent ICE and OKX. OKXICE’s public notice, issued 4 October and updated 19 October, states that trading cannot begin before 3 November, 30 days after the notice. The venue will operate through permissioned Uniswap v4 pools on OKX’s XLayer network, open only to verified wallets. Volume caps apply: each token’s trading cannot exceed 0.25% of the underlying stock’s average daily volume in the prior month.
Revenue Uncertainty
Citi downgraded the stock to neutral from buy on 13 October, citing questions over how much revenue Securitize can earn from tokenisation and the risk of lock-up expiries adding shares to the market. The firm has not disclosed the number of tokens issued or the price at which they are sold, leaving investors uncertain about the upside.
Regulatory and Competitive Landscape
Microsoft and Alphabet, two of the tokenised companies, have objected to having their shares tokenised under the SEC framework. The exemption’s volume caps could further limit uptake. Robinhood’s stock tokens are debt securities and are not offered in the US, illustrating the regulatory gap that Securitize must navigate.
Operational Consequences
The tokenisation launch has forced Securitize to confront several operational hurdles. First, it must secure liquidity on a nascent platform that relies on a single market maker. Second, it must manage potential dilution from lock-ups, as the SEC allows issuers to object within 30 days. Third, it faces a fragmented venue landscape, with OKXICE and the NYSE’s planned 24/7 platform yet to launch.
The firm’s share price decline reflects market skepticism about these challenges. Investors are pricing in the risk that the tokens may not attract sufficient volume, that regulatory objections may arise, and that the firm’s revenue model may be weaker than anticipated.
What to Watch
Securitize’s next moves will hinge on the volume of tokenised shares that materialise on OKXICE and the NYSE platform. If the tokens fail to attract significant trading, the firm may need to revisit its revenue strategy or expand its tokenised portfolio. Conversely, a surge in liquidity could validate the model and reverse the share decline.
